The unsentimental modernism of Stravinsky’s stunning “canticles of exaltation”; the brilliant word-painting of Kodály’s homage to the mighty organ; Britten’s poignant imagery glorifying all created life forms; and the mystery and majesty of Willan’s songs of the Saints are lasting testaments to Willan’s personal belief that “the chief duty of music is to delight”.
