MISSA PAPAE MARCELLI  (Pope Marcellus Mass)
Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina

SPEM IN ALIUM  Thomas Tallis

MADRIGALS AND MOTETS
Thomas Tomkins, Orlando Gibbons, William Byrd, Luca Marenzio, Claudio Monteverdi and Orlando de Lassus

By the middle of the 16th century, the tide was turning against the complex polyphonic style of the early Renaissance.  On the verge of banning music from the Church, the Cardinals rejoiced when Palestrina came up with his revolutionary Pope Marcellus Mass.  Composed in his simplified stile antico, the mass was to become the ideal model of the music of the Counter Reformation.  In England, Palestrina's great contemporary, Thomas Tallis, composed his astonishing Spem in Alium.  This is the 40-part motet which listeners will recognize as the point of departure for a 40-speaker sound installation that had visitors flocking to the National Gallery of Canada 430 years after its composition.  A stunning spatial sound construction, Spem in alium will saturate you in sound.
